Faith, Perseverance, and Practical Steps to Financial Assistance

The Practical Steps That Led Me to Medical Financial Support

By Nimfa Nubla

When I was diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in 2024, I underwent a lumpectomy followed by 21 cycles of radiation—standard protocol even for stage-zero breast cancer. Having an HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) was a huge blessing; however, by the time I had my surgery, I had already reached my coverage limit. As a result, I had to pay for my radiation treatments out of pocket. Still, I remain deeply grateful to the Lord that the cancer was detected early, allowing for timely intervention. By God’s grace, I am now cancer-free.

Even so, my journey did not end there. Strict monitoring remained necessary—regular mammograms and breast ultrasounds, along with maintenance medications. This weighed heavily on my mind as I had already retired from my corporate job and no longer had HMO coverage. From the very first day of my cancer journey, I had been praying for the Lord’s provision, and once again, I turned to Him in faith.

During a conversation with a physician friend, I learned about the free diagnostic services offered at East Avenue Medical Center (EAMC). I had no prior knowledge of their programs nor did I know anyone there, but I was determined to explore what help might be available. One early morning, I went to EAMC equipped with my clinical abstract, government IDs, prescriptions, and my doctor’s requests for mammography and breast ultrasound.

Upon arrival, I saw a large banner at the building’s façade promoting their Zero Billing Program. That alone gave me renewed confidence that something good might come out of that day. Inside, the long queues were overwhelming, and I nearly turned back. But I felt the Lord urging me to press on. After asking a guard for directions, I was sent to the Outpatient Department and waited my turn for a consultation with a family physician. The process was challenging, especially after years of enjoying the convenience of HMO-covered care.

When it was finally my turn, I honestly explained my medical history and openly shared that I had come seeking assistance for my procedures and medications. I was referred to the Breast Center, and just before leaving, the person at the reception casually asked, “Kailangan mo ng tulong?” Without hesitation, I said yes, glad that I did not have to ask where, what or how to apply for assistance. She then guided me on how to apply for assistance through the Breast Center.

At the Breast Center, I once again explained my condition and circumstances to the attending physician and requested assistance not only for my diagnostic procedures but also for my medications. I was instructed to obtain cost quotations from the Radiology Department and the Pharmacy, which meant navigating more long lines and waiting times. Whenever I felt weary, I reminded myself that in my former role as a relationship manager, I had gone to great lengths to serve my clients well—waiting patiently was no different.

With the quotations in hand, I was guided to register under the Medical Assistance for Indigents and Financially Incapacitated Patients (MAIFIP) Program, spearheaded by the Department of Health with support from partner institutions. I underwent an interview detailing our family’s financial circumstances. I explained that my husband and I were both retired, our children were only beginning their careers, and our combined income could not cover my medical needs. I carefully outlined our monthly expenses and pension income, trusting that honesty and clarity would speak for themselves.

After completing my registration, I returned to the Breast Center with my documents. To my great joy, all my requested procedures were approved. My mammogram and breast ultrasound were scheduled, and even my medications were included—albeit limited to a monthly supply. Hallelujah! Once again, the Lord had answered my prayers.

When I returned to EAMC for my scheduled procedures, I was impressed by the quality of care and professionalism of the medical staff. The experience was comparable to that of the private hospital I had previously gone to. I was later told that many of the doctors at EAMC are among the best in their respective fields—and I truly believe that to be so.

I share my story in the hope that it may encourage others who are on a similar journey. Help is available, and seeking assistance can significantly ease the financial burden of medical care. More importantly, I hope this serves as a reminder that the Lord is always near—our ever-present help in times of need.
