Esther: A Woman Chosen for Such a Time as This

Esther is one of the most remarkable women in the Bible, not because she sought power or influence, but because she chose courage and faith when it mattered most. Her story, found in the Book of Esther, takes place in the Persian Empire during a time when the Jewish people were living in exile and facing a serious threat to their survival. Through Esther’s life, we see how God can use ordinary people in unexpected positions to accomplish extraordinary purposes.

Esther begins her journey as a young Jewish woman living quietly under the care of her cousin Mordecai. When she is chosen to become queen of Persia, her life changes dramatically. Yet with her new position comes a difficult challenge: she must decide whether to risk her own life by speaking up for her people or remain silent to protect herself. Esther’s struggle highlights timeless questions about identity, responsibility, and the cost of obedience.

One of the most powerful aspects of Esther’s character is her growth. She moves from a position of dependence and hesitation to one of confidence and leadership. Her famous decision to approach the king—summed up in her words, “If I perish, I perish”—reveals deep faith, selflessness, and trust in God’s plan. Even though God’s name is never mentioned in the book, Esther’s actions reflect a strong belief that God is at work behind the scenes.

Studying Esther helps us understand what it means to live faithfully in a difficult environment, to stand up for others, and to recognize that our position and opportunities may not be accidental. Esther’s life reminds us that bravery is not the absence of fear, but the decision to do what is right despite it—and that God can use moments of courage to change the course of history.
